How to Wall Mount Your LEGO Models
Wall mounting a completed LEGO model is one of the easiest ways to free up shelf space while turning the build into part of your room display.
Large LEGO Technic cars, Formula 1 models, aircraft and Star Wars ships can take up a surprising amount of space on a desk or shelf. Mounting them on the wall allows you to use otherwise empty vertical space and can give the model a completely different appearance.
The installation itself is usually straightforward, but there are a few things worth checking before drilling into a wall.

Before You Start
Before picking up a drill, check three things:
- You have the correct wall mount for your exact LEGO set.
- You know what type of wall you're fixing into.
- You know exactly where you want the finished model positioned.
Spending a few minutes planning the display is much easier than discovering that the car is too close to a shelf after you've already drilled the holes.
1. Check Your LEGO Set and Wall Mount
Set-specific LEGO wall mounts are designed around the geometry of an individual model.
That means the LEGO set number matters.
Two LEGO cars may look similar while having completely different chassis structures and weight distribution.
Before installation, check the product listing and confirm that the mount is compatible with your exact model.
For example, a LEGO Technic Ferrari SF-24 42207 should only be used with a wall mount specifically listed as compatible with set 42207.
Don't assume that a mount designed for another Formula 1 model will fit simply because the cars appear similar.
2. Decide Where the LEGO Model Will Go
Don't position the mount based only on where the fixing holes look convenient.
Think about the finished model.
A LEGO model can extend considerably beyond the mount itself, particularly:
- Formula 1 cars
- large Technic supercars
- aircraft
- Star Wars spacecraft
Hold the model approximately where you want it or measure its dimensions first.

- shelves
- doors
- light switches
- sockets
- furniture

Mark the approximate position of every model before drilling.
Low-tack painter's tape is useful for this.
Create rectangles representing the approximate footprint of each LEGO model and move them around until the display feels balanced.

For aircraft or Star Wars ships, a looser arrangement can create more of a flying formation.

3. Choose the Display Orientation
The orientation changes both the look of the model and the amount of wall space it occupies.

4. Identify Your Wall Type

Different wall constructions require different fixing methods.
Common wall types include:
- masonry
- brick
- block
- plasterboard
- timber-backed walls
A fixing suitable for solid masonry may not be suitable for plasterboard, and vice versa.
Always use wall fixings appropriate for:
your wall construction + the load being supported.
If you're uncertain what the wall is made from, don't guess.
You should also check for hidden electrical cables, pipes and other services before drilling.

Can You Mount LEGO on Plasterboard?
Yes, LEGO models can be displayed on plasterboard walls when an appropriate fixing system and installation method are used.
The important part is selecting a fixing suitable for the particular plasterboard construction and expected load.
Different plasterboard situations can require different fixings, so avoid treating every hollow wall in exactly the same way.
If you aren't confident identifying the wall construction or choosing the appropriate fixing, ask someone suitably experienced before installation.
5. Position the Wall Mount
Once you've chosen the location, place the wall mount against the wall.
Use a spirit level where appropriate to ensure the mount is positioned as intended.
This is particularly noticeable with:
- horizontal aircraft
- straight vertical cars
- grid-style displays
A small positioning error can become much more obvious once a large LEGO model is attached.
Mark the fixing points lightly with a pencil.
Then remove the mount.
6. Check Before Drilling
Before making any holes, check the marked position again.
Make sure:
- the mount is level
- the LEGO model will clear nearby objects
- the orientation is correct
- you know the wall construction
- the planned fixing is suitable
- the drilling area has been checked for concealed services
This is the point where moving the mount is easy.
After drilling, it isn't.
7. Install the Wall Fixings
Install your chosen wall fixing according to the instructions supplied with that fixing system.
The exact drilling method, drill-bit size and fixing procedure depend on:
- the wall construction
- the fixing being used
- the load
- the fixing manufacturer's specifications
Because of this, there isn't one universal drill size or wall plug that should be recommended for every installation.
Follow the instructions for your specific fixings.
8. Secure the LEGO Wall Mount
Once the wall fixings are ready, position the BrickNest mount over the fixing points.
